Your Own Aerial View.

Skyros is an aerial camera which takes overhead photographs. It illuminates a unique bird’s eye view from where one can understand the intimate relationship with the environment in a refreshing new light.

How it works: Skyros is pneumatically launched up to 120 feet in the air where it stabilizes itself as the rotors start. As it flies back to the user it takes photographs at various intervals. The user then links it back to its base and can view the photographs. There is an inbuilt sensor in the flying module which brings the camera back to the user too.

SpaceX Falcon 1 - first privately-funded spacecraft in orbit

After three dismal failures, the fourth launch attempt resulted in the two-stage Falcon 1 streaking into orbit last night after a flawless liftoff at 7:15pm EDT. Even though this orbital insertion occurs 45 years after the first time NASA did it, it's a first for a privately-funded commercial venture.

Future Plans:

· re-use of the first stage after a Pacific splashdown

· launch 1,256-pound payloads atop the 68-foot rocket into low earth orbit.

· launch a bigger design called Falcon 9, destined for cargo hauling to the International Space Station.

Sony's Green Mobile for Future.

The Sony Ericsson Greenheart Concept phone was spotted at a Sony event last week in Copenhagen.

The Differentiator:

bio-plastic shell, HTML-based manuals, a recycled plastic keypad and an energy-efficient charger that uses only 3.5 mW of power during standby. In comparison, most efficient cell-phone chargers use 30 mW on standby.

With the warranty, the phones can be recycled anywhere in the world if brought to designated drop-off areas. Currently, there are over 500 drop-off areas, and Sony plans to add more in the future.

Mobile Phone App to Track Carbon Footprint

A new software application will make keeping track of your carbon footprint as easy as having a mobile phone in your pocket. A London-based start-up has developed software for mobile phones that uses global positioning systems (GPS) to automatically figure out whether you are walking, driving or flying and then calculate your impact on the environment.

Carbon Diem’s inventors claim that, by using GPS to measure the speed and pattern of movement, their algorithm can identify the mode of transport being used. The software then calculates the amount of carbon dioxide the journey has emitted into the atmosphere – without any need for input from the user.

The system’s inventor, Andreas Zachariah, a graduate student of the Royal College of Art in London said, “We’re facilitating people to make little changes and allow those changes to be noted and registered and possibly shared.”

Single Seat Helicopter Design by Igarashi Design

Igarashi Design has introduced a single seat helicopter with amazing looks. It is equipped with everything that is required to give the private flight a higher reliability. But you need to take pilot training before flying your own helicopter because only one person can sit and operate this helicopter. The design looks like a robot if you see the front right look. It is very small in size as compared to other helicopters.

Owings & Merrill recently completed construction on their incredible Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland.

The site for the Catholic Cathedral is the location of the old St. Francis de Sales Cathedral, which was irreparably damaged by the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The Cathedral of Christ the Light is home to the Oakland Diocese, the Bishop and over 500,000 parishioners. Construction began in 2005 and was just recently completed, with the Cathedral scheduled to be dedicated and consecrated on Thursday, September 25th in a private service. It will be open to the public for a special mass on Friday at 10 am, and regular weekend service will begin on Sunday.

The New Green California Academy of Science

After nearly a decade in the making, Renzo Piano’s California Academy of Sciences is set to open this week - and Inhabitat recently took a sneak peak inside the incredible new institution! A crowning achievement of sustainable architecture, the Academy will house 38,000 live animals and is on track to receive LEED platinum. It is currently the only institution in the world to feature an aquarium, a natural history museum, a living rainforest, a planetarium, and world-class research and education programs - all housed under a 2.5 acre green roof. Read on for a tour of the museum’s many splendors!

From the foyer on ascended several staircases and were presented with the Academy’s expansive 2.5 acre green roof. Its rolling series of hills and valleys are modeled upon San Francisco’s natural landscape, and the roof’s native plants absorb 90-98% of the building’s rainfall. All around the roof’s edges runs an encircling halo of photovoltaic cells, providing 60kW of electricity - enough to supply 5-10% of the structure’s energy needs.

A transparent four-story dome in the Museum’s east wing houses the Academy’s stunning “Rainforests of the World” exhibit, complete with flying birds, insects, butterflies, and frogs hidden amidst the verdant green vegetation. Conceived as a “celebration of life”, the exhibit will grow and change as its ecosystem develops - in three to five years the dome’s flora will enshroud it beneath an ethereal rainforest canopy.

From the peak of the rainforest one descends down a glass elevator into the Academy’s extensive aquatic exhibits. An incredible acrylic tunnel serves as the gateway, exposing the inner workings of the Amazonian flooded forest.

The Academy’s Philippine aquarium is home to the largest indoor coral reef exhibit in the world. The 212,000 gallon tank is flush with over two thousand species of fish, and the reef was grown entirely from pieces of coral that were either cultivated or purchased from other aquariums.

Incredible architecture aside, perhaps the most stunning aspect of the revitalized institution is it’s steadfast commitment to a vital, living, and changing study of life. The California Academy of Sciences is a “natural future institution” that looks forward and embraces life rather than cataloging it away in the dark halls of distant history. As executive director Greg Farrington remarked, the museum seeks to explore “how we got here, and how are we going to find a way to stay”.

Spy ‘Bat-like’ Planes for the US Army

The University Of Michigan College Of Engineering, known for new inventions for advances in the energy industry, has recently been awarded a $10 million, five-year grant from the U.S. Army to develop a six inch robotic spy plane that bears a striking resemblance to a bat. The grant helped establish the University’s COM-BAT (Center for Objective Microelectronics and Biomimetic Advanced Technology), thus re-establishing the U.S. Army as a world leader.

The COM-BAT is designed to provide short-term but real-time surveillance and feedback to soldiers in urban combat zones using a collection of sight, sound and smell sensors while running on 1 W of power. The Army is hoping that the spy plane could scavenge power from vibrations, wind and of course the sun, which the University of Michigan has a particular expertise in. The robot they believe is “to be 1,000 times smaller and more energy efficient than systems being used now.” The COM-BAT project will also be used to vastly improve other existing technologies like solar cells and navigation and communication systems, which the team already feels can be dramatically reduced in size.

The University of Michigan will work in a collaborative effort with the University of California at Berkeley and the University of New Mexico for developing a different system on the spy plane.

Though facing certain hurdles in finding a way to give the COM-BAT a usable amount of battery life between charges, the potential applications of this condensed technology are virtually limitless.

Microsoft's virtual receptionist

Microsoft's Chief Research and Strategy Honcho Craig Mundie spoke at the MIT Emerging Technology Conference and prophetized up a techno-storm. Evidently he sees technology taking us toward a world where virtual presences inhabit a 3D space and use that as a base to interact with the rest of us. Microsoft is already planning to give it a go at its headquarters by installing a virtual receptionist.

When the virtual receptionist rolls out in the next few months, it'll present itself as a friendly avatar and be able to differentiate between individuals based on their appearance and clothing. It uses a combination of microphones and language processors to pick up what's being said, and can perform simple tasks for Microsoft employees, such as scheduling shuttle rides between the HQ's various buildings.

Jet Man flies over the English Channel

A Swiss man has become the first to cross the English Channel using a single jet-propelled wing after jumping out of a plane at 8200 feet.Yves Rossy is a 49-year-old former military pilot you used to fly Mirage fighters for the Swiss army and now flies an Airbus.

Mr Rossy aimed to reach speeds of up to 125mph but in the event managed 120mph during the 22 mile crossing from Calais to Dover — still an amazing feat.

Mr Rossy said:

“(It felt) great, really great. I only have one word, thank you, to all the people who did it with me.”

Known as “Fusionman,” he was aiming to follow the route taken by French airman Louis BlĂ©riot 99 years ago when he became the first person to fly across the English Channel in a plane.

The jet-pack wing was designed by Rossy himself, and is constructed from a lightweight carbon composite; despite measuring eight feet across, even with fuel it weighs a mere 55kg (120lb). Since having four jet turbines blaring next to your legs will do more than strip the hair from them, Rossy had to wear a flameproof suit for the attempt

Landing was courtesy of a parachute and crossing your fingers for somewhere relatively soft and tree-free. Mr Rossy now plans to fly over the Grand Canyon, taking off from a standing position on the ground and performing acrobatics
